A doula (pronounced doola) offers support to a couple
pre and post-natally as well as during childbirth. Doulas are becoming
increasingly commonplace to ensure a calmer, more empowered birth experience.
Research shows that there is a link between continuous support (offered
by a doula) and shorter labours, less need for caesarean section or
intervention such as induction, forceps of venteuse. As an osteopath
treating mums and babies I noticed that a good pregnancy did not necessarily
allow for a good birth. I was inspired a doula called Lilianna Lammers
to train with her and renowned obstetrician Michel Odent. My approach
to treating women through pregnancy with osteopathy has definitely been
influenced to allow for a more gentle, facilitative approach.
